Sniper of Sarajevo 1992
An antiquated bit of combat footage from the early 1990s recorded on VHS of the war in Bosnia Herzegovina. Here a sniper lays down his mark escaping a small truck which is also being fired upon by some kind of large calibre weapon or automatic cannon. This was filmed in Sarajevo sometime in 1992 during the initial phases of the deadly conflict. 'The Siege of Sarajevo was the siege of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the longest of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. After being initially besieged by the forces of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), Sarajevo was besieged by the Army of Republika Srpska from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996 (1,425 days) during the Bosnian War. The siege lasted three times longer than the Battle of Stalingrad and more than a year longer than the Siege of Leningrad (...) A total of 13,952 people were killed during the siege, including 5,434 civilians. The ARBiH suffered 6,137 fatalities, while Bosnian Serb military casualties numbered 2,241 soldiers killed.' (Source: Wikipedia) Some members of this site may already remember seeing this footage, but I was unable to locate the scenes on here. So I have uploaded them from my own personal collection. However, if it is a repost then my apologies. Supplied are two versions of the same camera angle. One without subtitles, and the other with French narration. |

Re: Sniper of Sarajevo 1992
Thanks. The first time I saw this was on analogue television in the mid 1990s. There is an extension to this footage where moments later a UN armored column is seen hastily driving down the street, only to be jeered at by the local Bosniak population. The truck burns to ashes. Cannot confirm with certainty, so others can correct me if I'm wrong. But I believe the weapon used to disable the truck was this Zastava M55 or variant of this model. They were certainly prevalent in the region, and there is an abundance of videos which emerged from the former Yugoslavia where these guns were used in a direct fire support role outside their designated AA capability. |

Re: Sniper of Sarajevo 1992
Created this thread over a year ago. Just managed to source additional news footage of this event from my VHS archives. Not much more to add, except to provide a new angle of the aftermath with a perspective of the burning truck, medical evacuation and speeding UN vehicles. Incoming tracer fire is also clearly visible. |
