Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread V

The whole "sniper" thing is dumb as shit. Any projectile could be considered a sniper round.
What is this "sniper" thing you speak of. Correct though, any round could be a "sniper" so long as it's fired from someone who matches that role, which is pretty broad.

There is no such thing as a "sniper gun" or a "sniper round".
That's not exactly true. There are entire small arms weapon systems and cartridges that were designed entirely for the role of long or extreme long range accuracy, some of them primarily for war, some of them for civilian target shooting or hunting capacity, but were then later adopted by militaries because of their notable accuracy and terminal performance. For example you're not going to find anyone firing a .408 CheyTac on a battlefield who isn't in the role of what we describe as a "sniper". Similarly, someone firing a .338 Lapua Magnum is someone who is going to be in the same role, though possibly less distance.

I reload several types of rifle and pistol cartridges in my garage. I like the topic.

The marksman is the sniper not the weapon used or what the weapon is chambered in. Considering weapons used in this conflict, I would bet money it is a AK74 5.45x39mm incendiary/tracer because they are so common in this war. Also it could be a 7.62x54R or 7.62x39mm.
Hold on a little confused by your argument... you say that the sniper is the person/role and not the weapon system (which is correct) but then you're saying the whole "sniper" thing is dumb because most likely it's just a common unremarkable rifle caliber being fired by a regular soldier..?

...

Well, this is a bit of a confusing topic, so I see why people misunderstand the sniper role.

I like the basic google definition the most since it's simple and wraps up the basic point:

A sniper is a military/paramilitary marksman who engages targets from positions of concealment or at distances exceeding the target's detection capabilities.
I'd describe snipers as:
1) Engages one target at a time, one projectile at a time.
2) Engages from a concealed position
3) Operates as a small solo/tactical team, separate from others - is independent.
4) Shoots to kill/aimed shots, not "spray and pray" or "suppressive fire"

I've also heard the word "snipe" used for other weapon systems, like tanks, long range AT, drones etc, when they are used to go in solo and take out one specific high-value target at range. It's not the "classical" role of a sniper, but the world is changing and if a commander is placing units onto the battlefield, then, placing a solo AT team in the bushes, 3 miles away from an intersection, with an order to take out the command vehicle from an advancing convoy...then I would be fine calling that team a "sniper team".

Conversely, if you have a sniper team with 50Cal sniper rifles storming the trenches along with 100 other soldiers, then I wouldn't call them snipers anymore.

Good to see them making lemonade out of lemons.

A fucking good shooter would have done.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread V

Zelenskyy posted a piece of music that was dedicated to Ukrainian Infantry units for Ukrainian celebration of "Ukrainian Infantry Day" today.

Zelenskyy:
"Our infantrymen are courageous, determined and brave warriors. Hardened by fierce battles and fire, step by step they bring our Victory closer.

Glory to the Ukrainian infantry! "

YouTube Description:
"Infantrymen are those who stare death in the eye until it looks away. The foot soldiers are those whose steps measure the price of our freedom. The infantry are those whose chests are the shield against which the enemy monster breaks its teeth. Infantry is the base. It is an honor for us to be able to creatively capture the spirit of noble warriors and write a song for the infantry. Glory to the infantry! Glory to the Armed Forces! editing director - Ilya Mkrtchyan, music author - Sasha Chemerov, lyricists - Sasha Chemerov, Kolya Serga, arrangement by Oleg Fedosov, photo of eyes used in the video by Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov"

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread V

TC going nuts over these lights in Melitopol saying they are aliens/ufos and even drones. They're just lights from occupying authorities lighting the "Rays of Victory" for 9 May.
