Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IX

Radio Svoboda released previously unpublished footage of Russian soldiers killing a civilian in Bucha and looting a store in 2022

The Ukrainian service of Radio Svoboda published CCTV footage from Bucha that captured the killing of 70-year-old local resident Volodymyr Rubailo on Yablunska Street on March 4, 2022. The full recording has only now been released, though some frames were made public back in June.

The video shows the man being shot and slowing his pace, after which he is finished off with a shot to the head. One of the Russian soldiers then approaches the victim’s body and takes something from his pocket.

According to Radio Svoboda, the soldier was Sergeant Volodymyr Borzunov, squad leader of the 234th Air Assault Regiment of Russia’s Airborne Forces. In an interview with Radio Svoboda, Borzunov denied that he or his subordinates killed civilians, but confirmed that Rubailo, as well as Oleksandr Konovalov and Ihor Horodetskyi, were killed by Russian troops.

The footage also shows scenes of looting — soldiers carrying food and drinks from a store in bags, baskets, and carts. Some of the stolen goods were consumed on camera, after which one soldier smashed the camera with a sword.

Government papers found in an Alaskan hotel reveal new details of Trump-Putin summit

Papers with U.S. State Department markings, found Friday morning in the business center of an Alaskan hotel, revealed previously undisclosed and potentially sensitive details about the Aug. 15 meetings between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin in Anchorage.

Eight pages, that appear to have been produced by U.S. staff and left behind accidentally, shared precise locations and meeting times of the summit and phone numbers of U.S. government employees.

At around 9 a.m. on Friday, three guests at Hotel Captain Cook, a four-star hotel located 20 minutes from the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage where leaders from the U.S. and Russia convened, found the documents left behind in one of the hotel's public printers. NPR reviewed photos of the documents taken by one of the guests, who NPR agreed not to identify because the guest said they feared retaliation.

The first page in the printed packet disclosed the sequence of meetings for August 15, including the specific names of the rooms inside the base in Anchorage where they would take place. It also revealed that Trump intended to give Putin a ceremonial present.

"POTUS to President Putin," the document states, "American Bald Eagle Desk Statue."

On Saturday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly dismissed the papers as a "multi-page lunch menu" and suggested leaving the information on a public printer was not a security breach. The U.S. Department of State did not respond to requests for comment.

Pages 2 through 5 of the documents listed the names and phone numbers of three U.S. staff members as well as the names of 13 U.S. and Russian state leaders. The list provided phonetic pronouncers for all the Russian men expected at the summit, including "Mr. President POO-tihn."

Pages 6 and 7 in the packet described how lunch at the summit would be served, and for whom. A menu included in the documents indicated that the luncheon was to be held "in honor of his excellency Vladimir Putin."

A seating chart shows that Putin and Trump were supposed to sit across from each other during the luncheon. Trump would be flanked by six officials: Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to his right, and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff to his left. Putin would be seated immediately next to his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, and his Aide to the President for Foreign Policy, Yuri Ushakov.

During the summit Friday, lunch was apparently cancelled. But it was intended to be a simple, three-course meal, the documents showed. After a green salad, the world leaders would dine on filet mignon and halibut olympia. Crème brûlée would be served for dessert.

Jon Michaels, a professor of law at UCLA who lectures about national security, said that the documents found in the printer of the Alaskan hotel reveal a lapse in professional judgement in preparation for a high-stakes meeting.

"It strikes me as further evidence of the sloppiness and the incompetence of the administration," said Michaels. "You just don't leave things in printers. It's that simple."

The printed papers are the latest example of a series of security breaches by officials of the Trump administration. Earlier this week, members of a law enforcement group chat that included members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) added a random person to a conversation about an ongoing search for a convicted attempted murderer. In March, U.S. national security leaders accidentally included a journalist in a group chat about impending military strikes in Yemen.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IX

Reuters publishes Putin's plan to end the war in Ukraine:

— No ceasefire is planned before signing a full agreement;

— The Armed Forces of Ukraine will withdraw from Donetsk and Luhansk regions;

— Russia will freeze the front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions;

— Return control of areas in Sumy and Kharkiv regions to Ukraine;

— Formal recognition of Russia's sovereignty over Crimea;

— Cancellation of at least some sanctions against Russia;

— Ukraine will be prohibited from joining NATO;

— Putin appears to have been open to Ukraine receiving certain security guarantees;

— Official status of the Russian language in some parts of Ukraine or throughout Ukraine, as well as the rights of the Russian Orthodox Church to operate freely.

==========================================

Sir Keir Starmer and European leaders will accompany Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington tomorrow. It comes after the US president met Vladimir Putin on Friday.

Ukraine's European allies emphasised that stopping the killing is a number one priority in any peace talks;

They also said Ukraine must have a seat at the table when any possible deal is being discussed.

Zelenskyy pressed the importance of a ceasefire and reiterated that his country's consitution means he cannot cede land.

Marco Rubio gave us a flavour of the US outlook on how things stand, saying both sides will need to make concessions in order to end the war.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff said Putin has agreed to allow US and Europe to offer Ukraine a NATO-like security guarantee.

That security isn't and wasn't about military involvement. After russia violated the Budapest memorandum, they also signed themselves, the US and the UK provided Ukraine with financial and military assistance (weapons, intelligence) and imposed economic sanctions on russia which were far from enough to actually hurt russia.

With this deal the security offered is also not being military involved as Ukr. is not a nato member but a strong Ukrainian army and a lot about weapons and training and intelligence. Ukraine offered to buy about $90bn worth of US weapons.

European countries are the first line of defence Trump said so i guess European countries have to partially pay for that $90bn. Ukraine is an important trading partner for many European nations so having a strong and stable Ukraine is better for EU and Nato. It also boosts collective security capabilities.

Also the EU is committed to supporting Ukraine's reconstruction efforts after the war, which can create economic opportunities plus facilitating joint procurement of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, which can benefit European defense industries.

Also European countries can enhance their influence on the international stage this way as now it's only russia, U.S and China dictating the world.

For the E.U. it's strategic investment in their own security, economic stability, and long-term interests.

Plus after that the U.S-Ukr. mineral deal can start (after rebuilding roads and infrastructure needed for that).

The deal creates a joint investment fund. Ukraine will contribute 50% of future revenues from newly issued licenses for its government-owned natural resources, while the U.S. will contribute through financial contributions and future military assistance, which will be counted as capital contributions to the fund.

The resources will remain the property of Ukraine, and Kyiv will choose where to do the extracting.

The US will play a role in helping to attract investment and technology to the projects in Ukraine.

A key victory for Ukraine in the negotiations was ensuring that it retains complete ownership and control over its natural resources and infrastructure.

The fund only applies to future investments, and Ukraine is not required to repay past U.S. military aid.

The agreement covers a wide range of minerals and resources, including rare earth elements, titanium, graphite, lithium, oil, and natural gas.

I don't think when American joint venture employees are actually working on that in Ukr. russia will start another invasion.

Will Ukr. give up Donbas for peace as they will loose the iron and coal industry which was a backbone for Ukr. economics. russia will never cease fire if they don't i think.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IX

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe...ts-2025-08-23/

The Pentagon has been quietly blocking Ukraine from using U.S.-made long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia, limiting Kyiv's ability to employ these weapons in its defense against Moscow's invasion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing U.S. officials.

The news came as U.S. President Donald Trump has grown more frustrated publicly over the three-year-old war and his inability to secure a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

After his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a subsequent meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy failed to produce observable progress, Trump said on Friday that he was again considering slapping Russia with economic sanctions or, alternatively, walking away from the peace process.
"I'm going to make a decision as to what we do and it's going to be, it's going to be a very important decision, and that's whether or not it's massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or we do nothing and say it's your fight," Trump said.
Trump had hoped to arrange a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy, but that has also proven difficult. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told NBC on Friday that there was no agenda in place for a sitdown with Zelenskiy.

"Putin is ready to meet with Zelenskiy when the agenda would be ready for a summit. And this agenda is not ready at all," Lavrov told NBC, saying no meeting was planned for now.
As the White House sought to persuade Putin to join peace talks, an approval process put in place at the Pentagon has kept Ukraine from launching strikes deep into Russian territory, the Journal reported.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has final say over use of the long-range weapons, the Journal said.
Neither Ukraine's presidential office nor the defence ministry immediately responded to Reuters' request for a comment outside business hours. The White House and the Pentagon also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IX

US President Donald Trump has warned that there will be "consequences" if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin do not meet to discuss ending the conflict in Ukraine.

He made the comments at the White House on Monday when asked by a reporter how long he was willing to let the situation "play out."

He said: "There could be very big consequences, but we'll see what happens. There might be very big consequences because this is something that has to end."

Trump also said he will see what happens over the next week or two, and will step in "very strongly" if he needs to.

Trump earlier reaffirmed his country's commitment to support Ukraine. But he noted the specifics of security guarantees had not been discussed yet.

Zelenskyy met with Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, in Kyiv. He posted on social media that they discussed how to "influence the Russians, compel them to engage in real negotiations, and end the war."

He also said in a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store that US and Ukrainian officials will meet at the end of the week. He added, "we would like to understand from the American side, whether the Russians are ready and for what configuration."

Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported that the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said, "All parties must build on the successes achieved during the Russian-American summit in Alaska, and Russia is doing just that."

“Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation,” Trump, 79, told reporters in the Oval Office of Putin, 72.

“And then, unfortunately, a bomb is loaded up into Kyiv or someplace, and then I get very angry about it,” he seethed, before adding: “I think we’re going to get the war done. It’s tough.”

The White House is continuing to push for a Putin-Zelensky bilateral meeting, Trump said Monday, before warning “there could be very big consequences” if Russia doesn’t agree soon.

“We’ll see what happens. There might be very big consequences, because this is something that has to end,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens over the next week or two, and at that point I’ll step in very strongly, and if I have to be there, I’ll be there, and we’ll either have a deal or we won’t.”

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IX

"Well, when they took me prisoner, first they shot my leg. I grabbed a grenade. They took it away from me.

Then they calmed me down, fed me sausage, and gave me water. Everyone told me I had to blow myself up with the grenade because that's what Putin said!"

Prokopyev Vladimir, born 16.02.1970, Irkutsk region, Kimiltey village. 39th brigade, 1st company Storm V, callsign "Beard." Captured near Pokrovsk, fought for a whole month.

He signed the contract in a strange way. He was caught crossing the road in an unauthorized place he was detained, and then he voluntarily signed the contract and helped the police get a bonus.

All the money he wanted to send to his daughter went to the commanders, who immediately took his bank card away.

He says he didn’t like the war.
