I'd think you would be relatively safe in one of those tanks.
There's a video around here of a SAA tank burning and its crewmen trying to escape. I would think that it's safe most of the time, but if you get trapped and the ammo starts cooking off/the inside is set on fire, it turns into a metal deathtrap.
