Pills they are, but what kind is the question as they look like ecstasy pills to me.

Could be a speed type mix or a pseudoephedrine tab, so they are more alert & their reaction time is quicker.
The Germans used these types of drugs for their blitzkrieg operations in WW2, kept them awake for days so that they could keep upright pushing forward in record time hence the name "Blitzkrieg" as they just steamrolled forward in a blitz fashion.

Hopefully some footage may surface in the future as this is the most visually documented war in history & it seems that every soldier has a mobile phone to document stuff so time will tell, fingers crossed !
