Not ruling out it was an absolutely terrible throw. I am a decent thrower, but can sometimes flub a toss if I'm wearing a glove.

Slow mo shows he's tossing something real high not into their direction but something (another grenade?) in the South-West part of the vid which hits and bounces right in front of that pit they're in and then flies into the pit before detonation. Directly in front of the 3 man group you can see the soil disturbed right after the guy throws the grenade. It looks like he flubbed the throw because of gloves.

Open to that. See they have some color to them. Leaning towards them being Ukrainian. Especially because of how organized they were.

My latest theory is that the grenade's spoon clipped his hand/ fingers then got spun out. You can see something shiny arc up and over that might be that, the spoon.
