These(maybe not all) grenades are specially designed to take out armored vehicles( including tanks ).
They use shaped charges which can penetrate top armor of any vehicle currently in service. It looks like a harmless puff of smoke and no damage, but in reality, the shaped charge creates a small, pencil sized hole in the armor and if you are luky, it ignites the tank from within.

And as already mentioned by faust, its probably not the safest thing to return these grenades back to your base.

There is also a psychological component to hitting that tank. Think of it like a big resonance can, it doesn't feel too good to be hit and be on the other side of the metal from one of those. Also, 50 dollar grenade vs 4 million dollar tank, worth the try
