i am sure the situation is far more nuanced than, perhaps, i initially understood it to be.
and i must admit i have a problem with the fact that despite the warsaw pact being wound up when the soviet empire imploded NATO still exists as if the cold war is still a thing.
but what i really have a visceral reaction against is this bit-

Giving ultimatums to sovereign states about their policy decisions, even if you think that policy will affect you, is an unforgivably shitty thing to do. so what if a country wants to join NATO (thank fuck they hadn't already joined though) and i know self determination is a thing, but when does an aggressive treasonous break-away state become a new country? as that's what an independent republic must surely be.
