Re: Russia/Ukraine War Discussion/thoughts Thread
With traditional journalism there always needs to be a trusted source, and if that source can be independently verified (by said journalist) then they would publish the story or claim. You made a statement to which I responded, nothing more. If your initial source is second hand information claimed by twitter or “it was all over Russian telegram”, then it is not a source nor can you verify it. If you believe you don’t need this journalistic principle/integrity, then like I said western journalism (as exercised by CNN, Fox, and so on) suits you. If anything it is a compliment |

Re: Russia/Ukraine War Discussion/thoughts Thread
Well the last time it was this bad for Russia they won by trashing everything in Ukraine and retreating to Moscow to let winter take care of the invaders. Don't think that option is on the table now.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that. I feel much more relaxed when I stop worrying about stuff I have absolutely no control over. Head in the sand? You betcha. Blissfully unaware But hey, you do you. |

Re: Russia/Ukraine War Discussion/thoughts Thread
Compliment? You lopped me in with your perception of the western propaganda machine. I don't believe it was a compliment. I personally, never said my sources for anything were Twitter/Telegram. I remember seeing a related exchange to which I was not a part of. Generally, I do not use Twitter, Telegram or any other social media as sources. It goes against my instinctual grain for truth. I abhor the big media giants such as CNN, FOX, MSN, etc. Social media in general has become something I see as a tool for mostly negativity. If I do use something from Twitter or Telegram, it's only because there are multiple other sources from all sides of the isle saying the same thing. I've used the other media giants as sources as well but only when there are multiple other sources from other sides/views to use as well. I try to use as much "independent" non-conglomerate sources as possible. Also, government sources of information are handled with care as well. Opsec is also a major factor in both our stream and our news posts. We also push "verified" information so sometimes our articles are a few days late. In our minds, better to be accurate and late. Hopefully we'll get more proficient. My point is that we are not all able to be put into a general western box (or American, or Russian, or any other label). Trying to operate outside the lines of any stereotype is challenging as conforming is the easy path. But for me, the truth overrules all and is what's most important regardless of how hard it is to find and how much it may hurt to hear sometimes. Our group definitely has room to improve as far as gathering opposition sources and that is a big task I have to take on as some of our news people from the past were not very selective in their sourcing. But the goal is to present a headline, some general facts and then information from all sides. That allows the reader to be fully informed in one article and able to use the information to read between the lines on what makes the most sense to them. Finding reliable legitimate sources for Russian information is tricky for me, so if you have any sources outside of Telegram and Twitter you would recommend, please let me know. I'm always on the hunt for that kind of stuff. Even if the information from one side to the other doesn't quite match up, the differences between them can be telling as well. Apologies if I bit your head off in reaction to the "western journalist" comment. Like the words conservative and liberal... the word western has turned into a four-letter word. As someone trying to keep a grip on reality, I'm extra sensitive to that kind of stuff.
