Tanks are pretty useless these days in any modern war with tank armor piercing ballistic capabilities.

the speed and top attack precision of modern anti tank systems, i think, are a technological advantage that will always exceed any defensive system. the offensive technology is easy, while the defensive requirements are massive. each vehicle must have a radar to actively track and shoot down projectiles, and passive systems would require tanks to have tons of reactive armor blocks on top, and the weight would be prohibitive. the russian attempts with the cage on top does not work. What's more, you can't mix the two systems. A radar and launcher or gun system would be obstructed by the reactive blocks or extra armor or cage.
The era of the big fat tank may be over. every tanker knows now that the heavy armor and reactive blocks and taking a hull down position means nothing at all - the kill shot will punch through the roof
