You mean, like those human shields in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and during the shock and awe bombings, the fire bombing of Tokyo and Dresden? All of the above were plans to reign down fire and cause massive civilian deaths. That is the goal of modern warfare. Your country is not morally exceptional. |

The Japanese circa WWII were Shintoists who believed their Emperor to be descended from God. The entire country -- soldiers, civilians, even children -- was ready to fight to the death in the event of an invasion of mainland Japan. Projected casualties among just the Allied forces were in the 1,000,000 range, and victory along that course would have involved the near-genocide of Japan's inhabitants throughout the course of a very lengthy occupation. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on the other hand, only cost about 250,000 lives. It's simple numbers. So many of us seem so comfortable with choosing the lesser of two evils when it comes to voting, but yet we can't seem to wrap our head around the fact that war -- which, arguably, involves nothing but various degrees of evil -- has to be waged the exact same way. Odd. |

No, they're slaves as well. But they're slaves to a party which has been hijacked and has had its original principles absolutely gutted and sold out to the highest bidder. The left, on the other hand, has since its inception believed that citizens are too stupid to govern themselves, and should be regarded and governed as dim-witted livestock that has to be fenced in because it's too stupid and helpless to even so much as cross the street without government's help. The opposite of liberalism is conservatism, but don't ever mistake Trumpanzees or anyone in the GOP for an actual conservative. The fact that such clowns have anything good to say about a man like Putin is proof of their unprincipled nature. |

Churchill's comments, during the early part of WW2 when an invasion of Great Britain was a real possibility, were of a similar vein to those of the Japanese: "We will fight them on the beaches, we will fight them in the streets. . ." thus indicating a willingness on the part of the population to fight the German invaders to the death. One can never know what the reality would have been like had the outer defenses collapsed under German assault and Hitler's troops marched into London. Continuous, vicious guerrilla warfare? Surrender to the perceived inevitable? It is pure speculation. Likewise with any prognostications of what would really have happened in the case of an American invasion of the main Japanese islands. The estimates you trotted out obviously serve the purpose of attempting to justify the atomic bombings, and are thus suspect as propaganda. That doesn't, ipso facto, prove that they couldn't have been realistic. Bottom line: we'll never know. That is the case with counterfactual speculations about war (and a great deal else). E.g. What if Pickett's charge at Gettysburg had succeeded? Would the outcome of the war have changed, or Union victory merely delayed? Nobody knows. While a reasonable estimate of the military situation after a Confederate victory at Gettysburg may be made, it is pure speculation as to how devastating the psychological impact of such a loss would have been on the Union leadership and forces.
