Israel Announces Largest Appropriation of State Land in West Bank since Oslo Accords 3 July 2024 The Civil Administration which manages civilian affairs in the West Bank designated 2,965 acres of land in the Jordan Valley region as state land last month, paving the way for its future development. According to the Peace Now organization, which campaigns against the West Bank settlements, this is the largest designation of state land since the Oslo Accords in 1993, and follows other recent large designations of state land including 1,976 acres of the Jordan Valley in March, 650 acres east of Jerusalem in February and 42 acres in the Etzion Bloc in April. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who also holds a position in the Defense Ministry with sweeping powers over civilian affairs in the West Bank, lauded the development along with the slated approval of thousands of settlement housing units over the next two days, saying the moves were designed to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state. The new designation of state land was issued by the Israel Defense Forces on June 25 but was only published on Wednesday, and involves land some 50 kilometers north of Jericho near the Yafit and Ma’ale Efraim settlements, immediately adjacent to the 1,976 acres of state land that was designated as such in March. The amount of land declared to belong to the state in 2024 — some 5,852 acres as of July — far outstrips any other year this century, according to Peace Now figures. The highest previous total was 1,181 acres in 2014. Declaring tracts of the West Bank as state land means they can be slated for future residential development, among other possible uses, but cannot be used to expropriate private Palestinian land which is formally registered in the land registry. The new designation of state land in the West Bank comes as the Civil Administration’s Higher Planning Committee began deliberations on Wednesday that will lead to the approval through different phases of the planning process of over 6,000 housing units in the West Bank settlements. |

Re: ISRAEL/PALESTINE Conflict Discussion Thread V (2024)
Part of being an Israeli is being promised safety as a Jew living in Israel, and the bodies need to be buried in Israel. So Israel will do everything they can to retrieve even a dead body and it became like this. When suicide bombers used to blow up buses in Israel the religious medical volunteers DNA check the parts and put them all together again. If an Israeli gets stranded in a foreign country and the shit hits the fan the Air Force will send a personal fighter jet to get them. And of course, when they traded 1000 living terrorists (including Yaya sinwah who had a brain tumor removed by Israeli doctors in Israel) for a single dead soldier. But yeah, to think that swap created this atmosphere where more hostages are taken... Seems dumb but... Israel wants to encourage people to want to live there, not deter them.... I dunno |

Hostage trading has been around since the beginning of recorded human history, between states, royalty were often hostages given to guarantee peace. But when it's not a state but a terrorist organization.... I seem to remember leaders say "we don't negotiate with terrorists." |

US confirms the Biden Pier to be shut down after unsuccessful attempt to reanchor it Head of US agency for global humanitarian assistance says Israel’s port of Ashdod is now likely to play larger role in delivering aid to war-torn Palestinian enclave 11 July 2024 WASHINGTON — The US military’s humanitarian pier off the coast of Gaza, which has been hampered by bad weather and aid distribution problems, will shut down soon, President Joe Biden’s administration said on Thursday, as officials estimated that aid would begin flowing through Israel’s port of Ashdod, instead. Biden announced the plans to put the pier in place back in March, in an effort to assist in delivering aid to the 2.3 million residents of the war-torn Gaza Strip. While the pier has brought in 8,100 metric tons of aid to a marshaling area on Gaza’s shore since it started operating in May, the 1,200-foot-long (370-metre-long) floating pier has had to be removed multiple times because of bad weather. Rough seas damaged the pier just days into its initial operations, forcing the military to remove it temporarily for repairs and then reinstall it, and it was again removed on June 29 due to to heavy seas, and was not reattached after that point. Much of the aid has not reached hungry Gazans after the UN's |
