Pretty simple really. Religion. When ignorant minds are indoctrinated to believe things we now KNOW are not true, and taught to fear something that doesn't exist, they'll do just about whatever they're told as long as it's told to them in a way that is authoritative and falls in line with the book they're given. People in power abuse it in a lot of places sadly. Especially in places like that where there's little or no real education, life is largely hopeless and miserable and they peddle the faith as an answer. Gods always tell their people they are oppressed and it's the world's fault. Kill the non believers, and there you go.

Not all religions are equal though of course. For example the Christian Bible teaches the same sort of behavior. In parts of the world, Christians behave **exactly** like these people (it's the same God even, the God of Abraham, and the Bible explicitly in black and white commands the same behaviors, no different at all) but those in power in the west seldom manipulate the beliefs of people to carry out shit like this (That and well, people in the west are lucky enough to be educated well enough to know that they don't REALLY believe what they're told, not enough to do what a book says. They just beat themselves up with internal conflict knowing it's bullshit but wanting it to be real, just not bad enough to be so immoral). They just use it to steal money from pensioners because "God needs it". They ignore all the murder/genocide/slavery/rape/incest being ok stuff that Islam and Christianity in other parts of the world embrace from the books.

It's sad really. When you're not well educated, it's easy to be afraid of the dark. And when something you're told and not allowed to question claims to have the answer... you'll do whatever you're told is necessary to get that little night light. Even though reading any other book will show you there's nothing in the dark to be afraid of, no reason to buy that mess and CERTAINLY no reason to harm others to get the comfort blanket or night light.
