A while back, there was a multi vehicle accident here that involved a tanker truck with gasoline. A fire started, and one of the cars was damaged so badly, the driver could not exit the vehicle. Naturally, there were police and fire teams on the scene. The newspaper reported that the trapped driver was begging (screaming) one of the cops to shoot him so that he wouldn't slowly burn to death. I would have done it in a heartbeat, but I was not that police officer. The officer did not, could not by law grant the driver his wish, and so he died in the fire. When I read that article, it bothered me for a long time. First the begging the cop to do the humane thing and put me out of my misery, and second, having to burn alive like that. I just can't imagine. Still bothers me actually when I think about it.
