He had some sort of accelerant/flammable liquid poured on him. You could see it on his clothing. The flames would have gotten high enough to have caught his clothes on fire. Would have just prolonged the inevitable by a few seconds. Besides, if he didn't catch fire by avoiding it, imagine the torture they would have put him through until they figured out another horrific way to kill him.
