Of course, we shouldn't condemn anyone about what their ancestors did. This doesn't necessarily mean that we are able to deny documented events with cheap excuses. That was an excellent idea, Ataturk was a great military leader and politician for the Turkish nation. Using the same logic, Turkey is responsible for any loss of life during the greek invasion in Anatolia, for not properly defending its lands. And since the modern republic of Greece was formed in 1974, any treaties signed before that are void and all the bad stuff between 2000BC and 1974 should be wiped from history books. This logic has an official term: historical negationism. The Ottomans deported almost one million Armenian women, children and elders to the syrian desert without provisions for their journey. The Ottomans gathered and executed nearly all able-bodied males of Armenian ethnicity. Ataturk himself warned the League of Nations about the destruction of Izmir. He had just been promoted to Mareşal (highest rank in the army). Days later, his forces raped most of the women they found in Izmir, burned the city to the ground and slaughtered or deported all non-muslims, including as many as 100.000 Armenians. These actions also have an official term: genocide. I feel sorry that most Turks can't get rid of their almighty "national pride" blindfold. It is common knowledge that history is written so we can study our ancestors' mistakes, correct them if possible, and avoid repeating them. In 1915 Ottoman authorities arrested and deported from Istanbul a number of Armenian intellectuals and local leaders. 100 years later, Turkish authorities are arresting and imprisoning Turkish intellectuals and local leaders for "involvement" in the failed military coup of 2016. Erdogan and his lackeys are steadily turning Turkey into a nationalist sultanate and a bad neigbour to everybody. FYI: -Germany officially apologized for the Holocaust and they educate their younger generations about their atrocities during WWII, in order to avoid repeating them. -The Crusaders got their comeuppance when they met the Mamluks. -In 2008 the US Congress apologized to African Americans for the institution of slavery, and the subsequent laws that discriminated against blacks as second-class citizens. They also apologized to Native Americans 7 or 8 times. -Australia officially apologized to Native Australians for what they call the "stolen generations". -Belgium apologized for the colonization and abduction of thousands of children in Congo. I totally agree. This is the nature of conflict and the sole reason for its existence amongst living beings. |
