Final Photos by Army Combat Photographer of Deadly Mortar Explosion
A mortar tube explodes during an Afghan Army live fire training exercise. The blast killed Amry Combat photographer SPC. Hilda Clayton and 4 Afghan National soldiers. Clayton took the 1st photo, and an Afghan photojournalist took the second.

This is marvellous stuff! It's flipping neat to see how slow we actually react. Explosion's almost done, the ground you stood on now minces you almost sideways in the air, and the earholes are still your first concern.

I remember that time well. The military and civilian community in the Augusta area were numb for a while. I don't know what the stats are for Afghan nationals taking us out, but it can't be good.  |

Friend, the guy on the right is the observer/spotter. he covers his ears when the loader prepares to drop the round down the tube. the loader's hands move from the round to his ears. it is normal procedure.

The backward Afghanis probably dropped the mortar round upside down into the tube. The detonating fuse in the nose of the round hit the firing pin...and the rest is history. |
