The point of the war is to destroy the Ukrainian military to the point were it cannot attack the independent regions, nor Crimea anymore. As such the war is not “absolutely pointless”.

As for the civilian casualties, ask any nation that started military aggression in the past 70 years; you cannot make an omelet without breaking a few eggs
