Re: Combatant Walks on Top of a Landmine in Eastern Europe.
Those dont usually kill just blow your foot off, if you have guys with you and they get right to you the person usually survives but is obviously disabled for life. War isnt fair, but ive always found mines to be shitty because they hurt more innocent people years later.

Re: Combatant Walks on Top of a Landmine in Eastern Europe.
My understanding of these style of mines is that they detonate when sufficient pressure is applied to the soft out plastic to deform the inner material and finish releasing the firing mechanism. I'm sure there is some anti tamper, but maybe not. Could be since they release so many out of a cluster munitions that anti tamper is generally not necessary. Just a thought. Might be able to just pick them up and as long as you don't squeeze them, you'd be mostly fine. |

Re: Combatant Walks on Top of a Landmine in Eastern Europe.
The whole series of Russian anti personnel mines are used in Ukraine. The one you mentioned, the air deployable one is the PFM-1. The others PMN, PMN-2, PMN-4 are typically buried. The combatant likely stepped on a buried PMN-4. The PFM-1 has a delayed fusing mechanism the prevents them for exploding when they are initially deployed and dropped. Touching a PFM-1 on the ground is a good way to create content for this site. |

You are correct, my apologies. I had recently watched some videos on the butterfly mines and some wires must have crossed. To be fair, it doesn't matter which mine it is, I'd just roll a tire over it from a distance because I like my feets. |

Re: Combatant Walks on Top of a Landmine in Eastern Europe.
The blast flows along the path of least resistance & seeing how mines are slightly buried (Preferably in hard ground) the blast or percussion, which does most of the damage, travels upward in a mushroom fashion & thus destroying anything in it's path no matter what type of boots your wearing. This was a percussion blast as there's flesh tearing & no real shrapnel wounds as if it had been a frag LM the damage would have been a lot more severe & completely shredded the entire flesh area rather than just the mushroom affect injury, quick blast up to tear & mame rather than to blow completely off due to fragments in the mine (Anti-Personnel Mine) which cause a much different effect. These plastic percussion land mines are a dime a dozen to make which makes them even more dangerous as they are very very hard to detect using a metal detector & because of this they can lay in the ground for decades, where the old steel ones can be detected easily & also rust away after a time & become inert but who ever lays the mines, should in retro spect, keep records of what, where & how these were distributed as they don't discriminate & remain active 24/7 till they are made inert. They will be finding ordinance all over the place for years to come because of this unnecessary war started by the invaders & IMO I believe that they should be the ones made to go & find it all, clean it up & make the countryside safe & habitable again as that's only fair, They fucked it, They fix it !
