I'm curious to know what the U.S. hopes to accomplish by supporting the rebellion. Even if Assad is overthrown, how then will anyone mitigate the ensuing power vacuum that would likely occur?

I suppose for the sake of convenience, the evidence implicating the use of chemical weapons by Assad's forces suddenly becomes more convincing once an Iranian backed organization like Hezbollah enters the theatre of combat. It's hard to say if there are even any "good guys" within this whole mess.
