530gp Video: Yeoncheon Guard Post Shooting, South Korea, June 19, 2005
Eight soldiers were killed at the 530 GP guard post in the Demilitarized Zone in Yeoncheon, South Korea, at about 2:30 a.m. on June 19, 2005. Army investigators said Private First-Class Kim Dong-min threw a grenade into the sleeping barracks and then fired up to 44 rounds from a K-1 rifle. Reported figures for the wounded ranged from two to four. The dead included 1st Lt. Kim Jong-myeong, the guard post commander, who was shot in a rest area, and Cpl. Lee Geon-wook, who died while being transferred to a hospital. Investigators attributed the attack to verbal abuse by superiors and said Kim was identified after rifle magazines were checked. Bereaved families later alleged that the deaths resulted from a North Korean attack covered up by the military. The Defense Ministry rejected that account, citing Kim's confession, which it said he had not retracted, and physical evidence. |
