Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received an emergency position indicating radio beacon alert from the French-flagged sailing vessel Albroc, which was beset by weather 925 miles off Honolulu in the path of approaching Hurricane Gilma.

The Coast Guard requested help from the USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer homeported in Honolulu. A Navy small boat crew rescued a woman, her 7-year-old daughter, their cat, and a tortoise from the sailboat during operations in the Pacific on Aug. 26, 2024.

The ship returned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after the rescue.
