The Coast Guard rescued two fishermen after the fishing vessel Tanusha capsized near Kodiak on Jan. 15, 2025.

Watchstanders at the 17th Coast Guard District Command Center received a distress alert from Tanusha's emergency position indicating radio beacon at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday. They launched a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak helicopter crew, requested help from the Alaska State Troopers, and tried to contact vessels near the distress signal by radio.

Crewmembers aboard the fishing vessel Victory responded and headed toward Tanusha's last known position. They found the vessel capsized and the two men in a life raft.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the two men with help from the Alaska State Trooper vessel Stimson, then flew them to emergency medical services in Kodiak in stable condition. One crew member showed signs of hypothermia and a head injury.

The two men were the only people aboard Tanusha. They abandoned ship when the vessel began taking on water about 23 miles southeast of Kodiak. A Coast Guard Sector western Alaska communications unit controller said the EPIRB was the only notification that the crew needed help.
