Polar Star Escorts Scenic Eclipse II from Ross Sea Ice
USCGC Polar Star (WAGB 10) responded to a request for assistance from the Australian-owned cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II after it became stuck in ice in the Ross Sea on Jan. 17, 2026. The cutter escorted the cruise ship out of the pack ice during Operation Deep Freeze 2026, while supporting the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Antarctic Program in Antarctica. The response took place on Polar Star's 50th birthday.
