OceanGate Titan Implosion: Seafloor Wreckage and Salvage Footage
The Titan submersible imploded on June 18, 2023 during a dive to the Titanic wreck, killing all five people aboard. The Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation released the footage below over the course of its hearings in North Charleston, South Carolina. Depths and timecodes are burned into the ROV video. In order below: 1. A recovery team member inspects debris from the Titan aboard the recovery vessel Gary Chouest in the North Atlantic near the Titanic wreck site, Sept. 30, 2023. 2. Wendy Rush and Gary Foss monitor data and text communications in the pilothouse of the support ship Polar Prince, June 18, 2023. A sound at the 24-second mark, later matched to the loss of communications and tracking, is believed to be the implosion reaching the surface. Released as investigation exhibit CG 141. 3. The Titan's tail cone standing on the seafloor at roughly 3,777 meters, a piece of carbon fiber lying beside it. Recorded June 22, 2023 by an ROV operated by Pelagic Research Services. 4. The aft dome, aft ring, hull remnants and carbon fiber debris spread across the seafloor, recorded the same afternoon. The Marine Board said this was the footage that established the catastrophic loss of the submersible and the deaths of all five aboard. 5. Salvage, June 26, 2023: the ROV rigs lifting straps to the wreckage on the bottom. 6. The ROV lifts clear of the seafloor with the recovery baskets loaded. 7. The full 30-minute salvage run from the same dive, unedited.
