The cargo ship Morning Midas capsized and sank Monday in international waters about 450 miles southwest of Adak, Alaska, after an onboard fire. The Coast Guard was notified at 5:35 p.m. The ship sank in water about 16,400 feet deep.

A Coast Guard C-130J Super Hercules aircrew from Air Station Kodiak had conducted an overflight of the fire on June 3, 2025, about 300 miles south of Adak. All 22 crew members were rescued by the motor vessel Cosco Hellas, with no reported injuries.

The ship was carrying 3,048 vehicles, including 70 fully electric vehicles and 681 hybrids. It also reportedly had 350 metric tons of marine gas oil and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard.

There are no reports of visible pollution. The Coast Guard is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Zodiac Maritime, the manager of the Morning Midas. The salvage vessels Garth Foss and Salvage Worker remain on scene with pollution response equipment and are conducting continuous assessments.

The oil spill response vessel Endeavour is en route from Dutch Harbor and is expected to arrive Thursday with additional pollution response equipment, including an oil spill containment and recovery system.
