By the looks of that knackered old thing, the 'sailor' must have just used it until it fell apart.

Marine Archeologists say that 95% of all the ships ever built, were lost at sea. They continued to sail them until they were unseaworthy, and then they were lost to flooding or other accident. So it didn't matter how well the ship was built, eventually it was headed for the bottom.

He's a very lucky fella as he looked like he wouldn't be able to swim for very long.

Re: Helicopter Rescue of Man from Sinking Boat

Those helicopter guys are PHENOMENAL!! I just read a story about a sailboat with 4 people (two of them severely injured) that needed rescue in the North Atlantic. It was too far to be reached by helicopter, and the nearest ship was a couple hundred miles away.

What did they do? THE HELICOPTER CREW HEADED OUT OVER THE OCEAN, COUNTING ON HOVERING OVER A COAST GUARD RESCUE SHIP THAT COULD GIVE THEM SOME FUEL AFTER THE RESCUE, WHILE THEY HOVERED OVER THE SHIP! They weren't even certain they could find the fuel supply ship!

They flew directly to the yacht, picked up the 2 injured people, and then started back for shore, and were successful in locating the fuel supply ship. They got both patients back to Boston, but the woman died right after they finished refueling while hovering over the fuel boat, and the man died as they approached landing at the Boston hospital. Talk about a helicopter crew with a HUGE SET OF BALLS!

The two people left on the boat (a couple who had never sailed on that boat before, were Americans, and had hitched a ride back to the U.S. on the German guy's ocean boat, which the German and his wife had sailed all over the world. They didn't speak any German, and after both the German captain and his wife were knocked out by the swinging boom, it left them alone on a sailboat that they knew NOTHING about, with no one to translate any labels or instructions, since they were all in German.) The ocean was running 30-60 foot waves, with winds up to 60 mph. They got the sails down and got the engine started, and turned the boat back towards the continental U.S. The next day, they were in range of rescue, and the Coast Guard went out and picked them up successfully, abandoning the boat. It was a $2 million yacht, and some salvagers went out and brought the boat back in successfully.

This was from an article about how even the BEST equipped yachts, with experienced transatlantic sailors, can still have things go wrong.

They just tickle her legs until she wiggles right out of the ground, and they can extract her?
