Fuel Barge Defiant Salvage Continues Off San Juan Harbor
A Unified Command is continuing salvage operations on the 285-foot fuel barge Defiant, which grounded near Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Puerto Rico. Defiant went aground Feb. 9, 2026, after the tug vessel Storm reported its towline had snapped within San Juan Harbor. The barge was sitting along the rocks by Castillo San Felipe del Morro on Feb. 10. On Feb. 12, salvors removed approximately 1,000 gallons of residual fuel from Defiant. On Feb. 17, a salvage crew member was making custom seal covers for the barge, which salvors need to complete pressurized system testing for final barge removal.
