Five Missing from Capsized Mariana Off Saipan
The Coast Guard and partner agencies searched for five missing crewmen from the cargo vessel Mariana offshore Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The Mariana initially had a disabled engine about 125 nautical miles northwest of Saipan on April 15, 2026. Search operations ran from April 16 to 26, with crews covering more than 127,900 square nautical miles over more than 85 hours. On April 19, USCGC Frederick Hatch (WPC 1143) worked near the capsized vessel northeast of Pagan with parajumpers from the U.S. Air Force 31st Rescue Squadron, who deployed from a 36th Airlift Squadron C-130 Hercules. The parajumpers conducted dive operations, checked the vessel exterior, and used an underwater remotely operated drone to search the interior. An HC-130 Hercules crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point also flew over the overturned Mariana on April 19. Crews were searching for the five missing crewmen and an orange 12-person life raft.
