Cutter Spar Frees 730-foot Vessel in Whitefish Bay Ice
Coast Guard Cutter Spar (WLB 206) responded to the 730-foot motor vessel Honorable Paul J. Martin in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, on April 7, 2026, after the vessel became beset by ice. The cutter broke ice alongside the vessel and created a relief channel to reduce pressure from nearby ice. That allowed the vessel to continue its transit across the Great Lakes. The work supported Operation Taconite, one of two Great Lakes District ice-breaking initiatives for maritime commerce and waterway safety.  ·  ·  ·
