Coast Guard Rescues 6 from Grounded Moana Off Maui
Coast Guard crews rescued 6 mariners from the grounded sailing vessel Moana about a half mile off Oluwalu, Maui, on Thursday. At 7:20 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a report from Station Maui that the Moana had run aground and was drifting further into a surf zone. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a Station Maui 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew and an Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules aircrew. The C-130 crew dropped illumination flares to guide in the RB-M crew and surface parties from Maui Fire Department. The Station Maui crew rescued the mariners and escorted them back to Station Maui, with no reported injuries. The Coast Guard is monitoring salvage plans being formulated by the master of the Moana.
