Coast Guard Rescues 2 from Sinking Sailboat Off Sabine
Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a mayday call on Feb. 21, 2024, from a man and woman aboard a 31-foot sailboat 35 miles southeast of Sabine, Texas. The boaters reported severe mechanical issues and said the vessel was taking on water faster than the bilge pumps could handle. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston circled overhead while a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Sabine responded. The boat crew used oakum and a rubber gasket to slow the flooding. The crew partially dewatered the vessel and transported the two boaters safely ashore.
