The Coast Guard medevaced a 62-year-old man early Tuesday, June 23, after his 32-foot sailing vessel ran aground on Lake Huron south of Calcite, Michigan.

Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes watchstanders received a mayday on channel 16 at 9:36 p.m. from the man, who reported keel damage but said the vessel was not taking on water.

A Coast Guard Station St. Ignace 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew launched at 10:22 p.m. and arrived near the vessel at 11:46 p.m. After they arrived, the man reportedly sustained an injury, and the boatcrew could not reach the vessel because it had drifted farther into shallow water.

Sector Northern Great Lakes coordinated with Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, which launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. The aircrew arrived on scene, deployed a rescue swimmer at 2 a.m., and hoisted the man onto the helicopter.

The helicopter crew took him to emergency medical services at the air station, and he was then transported to Munson Medical Center for additional medical care.
