Coast Guard Hoists Man Off Disabled Sailboat West of Sitka
The Coast Guard rescued a man from a disabled vessel about 145 nautical miles west of Sitka, Alaska, on Oct. 11, 2021. Coast Guard Seventeenth District watchstanders received an EPIRB alert at 3:00 p.m. The registration information showed the vessel had been sold, the registration was expired, and the batteries were low. Watchstanders launched an Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk crew and an Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules crew at about 3:15 p.m. The Sitka helicopter arrived at 5:21 p.m., hoisted the man from the 33-foot sailing vessel Ananda, and flew him to Yakutat, where local EMS met them. The previous owner told watchstanders the new owner planned to leave Seward for the Philippines, with a possible stop in Seattle beforehand. On-scene weather was overcast at 400 feet, with winds at 70 knots and seas at 30 feet.
