Calhoun Seizes $74M in Cocaine in Atlantic Interdiction
Coast Guard Cutter Calhoun (WMSL 759) seized approximately 10,000 pounds of cocaine, worth an estimated $74 million, during an Atlantic Ocean interdiction on April 12 and 13, 2025. Calhoun, under tactical control of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, detected a suspicious fishing vessel in international waters about 1,265 miles west of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. The vessel was exhibiting behavior consistent with narcotic trafficking. Calhoun launched a cutter small boat, boarded the fishing vessel, and detained five suspected smugglers. The cocaine was seized from the vessel's fish hold, and the five suspected smugglers remain in U.S. custody pending prosecutorial disposition. Calhoun commissioned in 2024 and is a 418-foot Legend-class national security cutter homeported in North Charleston, South Carolina.
