Bulk Carrier Collides with Chinese Fishing Boat
The Panama-flagged bulk carrier First Margaux collided with the Chinese fishing vessel Luqing Yuanyu 108 in the Singapore Strait on September 17. The 229-metre bulk carrier First Margaux (Panama-flagged, ~82,300 deadweight tonnes) and the 49-metre fishing vessel Luqing Yuanyu 108 (China-registered). Both ships had left anchorage and entered the same westbound shipping lane under Singapore's Traffic Separation Scheme. Video captured from the deck of the smaller fishing boat shows the massive cargo ship approaching from behind and striking the fishing vessel's starboard quarter. The impact pushed the fishing boat sideways, heeling it sharply and causing seawater to wash across the deck. However, the fishing boat did not capsize or sink. Maritime experts analyzing tracking data from MarineTraffic are reviewing traffic density, potential right-of-way rules under COLREGs,(Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972) and why the smaller fishing vessel was positioned in the primary commercial lane. |
