2 People and Dog Rescued 90 Miles Off Hernando Beach
A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew rescued two people and their dog on Nov. 18, 2023, about 90 miles off Hernando Beach after their sailboat became disabled. The boaters and dog were brought back to Air Station Clearwater in good health. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a digital selective calling distress alert at about 11 a.m. A porthole had reportedly broken, allowing water into the vessel and damaging some electronics. Sector St. Petersburg said the DSC alert gave the Coast Guard the vessel's last known position because the owners had registered the equipment. Salvage for the vessel is being coordinated.
