Re: Film Reviews.
Fear over the city. 1975. France. 5/10 A detective is on the case of the man who phones single women up, then kills them. Average crime thriller that at the start, has some interesting stunts, and a secondary plot involving a bank robber that previously got away. When that gets solved, the focus is the main plot. Standard kind of fare from a mid '70s film. The last section is where it noticeably runs out of steam. Still a moderately interesting watch with the lead policeman exhibiting a wry sense of humour. |

Shiri. 1999. South Korea. 9/10 Action spy thriller about a special force group of north koreans, bent on 'unifying' the country by restarting the war. Violent and well paced, its a purely Korean film. This means it has a plot that unfolds as it goes, with only a few characters to keep track of. A well written script, it makes use of its two hour run time. The action scenes are kinda chaotic, but give it a sense of realism. |

Re: Film Reviews.
Dead talent society. 2024 Taiwan. 8/10 Ghosts inhabit certain areas and scare the living as a way of staying 'alive' and not disappearing. The are all members of a talent agency, which celebrates the top performers. Very enjoyable horror comedy that has the classic styles seen in asian cinema.. The plot is fast moving and complex, but doesn't become confusing. The first hour sets up nicely the reigning ghost and her rival that she helped train. With a third ghost added as the newbie who doesn't want to disappear, it uses the second half, with a slight detour into her back story, as a action packed comedy horror finale. |

Re: Film Reviews.
Heavy trip. 2018. Finland. (rewatch) 10/10 A death metal group struggles with a lack of acceptance and the death of their drummer, to play at a metal festival in Sweden. The plot in general follows a typical 'under dog story'. This is usually for a sports team, inspired by a down and out coach. Where this differs is that the band forge on regardless themselves. It has alot of in jokes for true metal heads, but enough humour for the average viewer. The characters come across as polite, sensitive and well meaning, despite the brutality of the music. |

Re: Film Reviews.
Dark nuns. 2025 South Korea. 6/10 Two nuns do a exorcism on a young lad. Well filmed with the scenes having a special visual flair. Plot wise it moves nicely, including different elements of religion. It does get into that aspect at the expense of the characters, even thou one is given a back history. Where is falls down is the third act, this is a prolonged exorcism that although well filmed, is slow and repetitive. |

Re: Film Reviews.
Very well thank you. Death is my trade. 1977 Germany. 8/10 Biography of Rudolf Hoss, the commander of Auschwitz. With a run time of just over two and half hours its a thorough look at the man. Beginning with his early days during WW1 and ambition to get to the front to fight for germany. It shows a man who had a excellent work ethic, was dedicated and very patriotic. The film is slow but engaging, with title cards at certain points that sum up the next series of events. Long scenes show just how a man like him could be used by a political party. Some scenes are filmed on location at Auschwitz. It has a sterile quality, shows a man internally conflicted, but if left to run the farm depicted midway thru the film, would never have a mark in world history. No trailer. |

Re: Film Reviews.
11 Rebels. 2024. Japan. 6/10 A group of criminals plus a couple of soldiers, are tasked with holding a fort against the imperial army. Set in 1868, its basicly a suicide squad historical war drama. The run time of two and a half hours allows it to get fully into the politics of the time. With little knowledge, it becomes a bit of a drag. Well filmed with some gore and pretty good battle scenes, it would appeal to local audience (Japan) or others with a interest in the history of that country. |

Re: Film Reviews.
The girl with the needle. 2024. Denmark. 8/10. Post WW1 a woman gets pregnant and visits a woman who promises to give the baby to a willing family. Filmed in black and white, its a slow bleak drama. The characters are likeable, but struggle through each day, this adds to the surmounting horror. With a simple plot inspired by true events, it shows aspects of humanity that are pretty shocking, but done in a simple unflinching way. |
