i'm going to guess that bark, as it comes from the outer protective barrier of the tree, will harbor far more fungi spores/ pathogens than the interior shredded wood. this tomato is steps out my back door, so it will be coddled. mulch: weed control paper with cedar chips on top.  · |

Negative. Acidic mulches such as pine bark fines, pine needles or shredded pine have a pH of 3.5 to 4.5 which is is for too acidic for spores and pathogens to exist. Pine Bark's unique composition adds porosity as well as retaining nutrients and mosture. Thats a good question. I know you had soil born diseases last season. Pine bark is your friend.  |

Soil contains a lot of different fungi and I am sure some fungi in soil have the ability to harm plants. However, the fungi in some mches live on rotting wood, not on live plants. They will not kill or even harm your plants. "Wood chip/bark mulches and composts can be a source for several interesting fungi including artillery fungus, slime molds, bird's nest fungi, stinkhorns and mushrooms. These fungi often raise questions from home gardeners, particularly after rainy weather. Wood, bark and composts, as organic matter, naturally decompose over time. Bacteria and fungi are involved in this decomposition process deriving their energy for growth from these carbon-based compounds. These fungi are natural components of the mulch environment, are not harmful to landscape plants, and no known health hazards are associated with them unless they are eaten. They are usually found from April through October, following rainy weather."  |

Harmful pathogens can not exist at such low pH. Beneficial fungi is what you want. Without sufficient beneficial microbes on (and in) our bodies, we get sick very fast. It’s the same for plants. Also you should only use composted or partially composted fines, as fresh can steal nitrogen and kill beneficial fungi in the soil. Alltreat is a good product. Never had an issue with them. |
