Alas, Protagoras
Am I the measure of all things that are? For I have found that nothing truly is. Though “All I say is false” may sound bizarre, all I have known is naught—not mine nor His. “Why speak at all, then?” one may dare to ask. “Because I want my lies to be believed.” So, spreading love has now become my task, for love and lies are one. Be not deceived! No fate, no fear, no hope. Noel! Noel! A song of cellars—casks of wine and silt— now haunts this lonely ghost inside its shell. In lieu of love, I fill my sock with guilt. Ammonia oysters thrust in me a pearl; I swallow, choke, and die. The truth unfurls. ·

Re: Alas, Protagoras
Yes. An over the top yet ultimately empty declaration of joy that simultaneously mocks religion (re. The First Noel) when contrasted with the surrounding nihilism in the rest of the strophe. A nod to the futility of wishful thinking in a hostile existence.
