Looks to me like a hydraulic hose busted on the cylinder. The "explosion" is just fluid being pushed out of the cylinder by the weight of the bed coming down. Lots of potential for injury but not much damage to the truck other than the glass.

You have to be in the truck to work the control. I pulled a dump trailer for 17 years & have had hoses break, depending on the condition of your equipment, how much weight you had on, and how high it was when it comes slamming down definitely plays a role in what damage can occur besides the usual hydraulic oil EVERYWHERE.
