Santiago de Compostela Derailment, 79 Dead in 2013
On July 24, 2013, an Alvia train traveling from Madrid to Ferrol derailed on a bend about 4 kilometres outside Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The train entered an 80 km/h curve at 179 km/h. All 13 cars derailed and four overturned. There were 222 people aboard, 218 passengers and four crew. Seventy-nine people died and about 140 were injured. The driver was later charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness and injury-related charges.
