RAF Harrier GR7 Crashes into Sea at Lowestoft Air Festival
On August 2, 2002, RAF Harrier GR7 ZD464 crashed into the sea while hovering during the Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival in Suffolk. The pilot ejected before impact and was rescued by a lifeboat. The crash followed a control error during the hover: the throttle was retarded instead of moving the nozzle lever to the Hover Stop position, then the nozzle lever was inadvertently moved forward while the landing gear was being lowered, causing a sudden loss of altitude.
