A Soviet R-16 rocket exploded at the Baikonur test range on October 24, 1960, killing ground personnel. The disaster became known as the Nedelin catastrophe, after the Soviet marshal killed in the blast.

The explosion occurred while personnel were working on the fueled missile. The fuel had not been drained before the work continued. The death toll was not publicly disclosed at the time, with later figures varying.
