Pendulum Ride Breaks Apart at Ahmedabad Park, Two Killed
A pendulum ride broke apart at an amusement park on the Kankaria lakefront in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, on the evening of July 14, 2019. The ride swung a single row of 32 seats on a long arm. With about 31 people aboard, the arm failed near the top of its travel and the carriage fell roughly 20 feet onto the concrete apron below, coming apart on impact with riders still strapped in. Two people were killed, both in their twenties, and about 27 were injured. Accounts of what gave way first differed. A fire officer said the pipe of the main shaft broke, other reports described a snapped load-bearing cable followed by welding failing along the shaft, and police said early on that heavy-duty bolts had worked loose. The question was referred to the state forensic laboratory. Six people connected with the park operator were charged. The state government ordered safety checks before rides reopened, and 11 of the operator's 23 rides were later found defective.
