The explosion happened two and a half years ago. The decision to close the mill was made a few months ago. But paper making in Maine has been in decline for decades and the closure of the mill was probably inevitable and only accelerated by the fact that without the digester they were unprofitable and rebuilding itdidn't make financial sense in a declining industry.

Shame. I don't know much about Maine economy but didn't realize their timber industry was in decline.
