Oppau Fertilizer Silo Explosion, Germany, September 21, 1921
On September 21, 1921, about 4,500 tonnes of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate fertilizer exploded in a tower silo at the BASF plant in Oppau, Germany, now part of Ludwigshafen. The blast killed an estimated 500 to 600 people and injured about 2,000.
