Oceanos Sank After Uncontrolled Flooding in August 1991
The French-built, Greek-owned cruise ship Oceanos sank after uncontrolled flooding in August 1991. After a bomb-threat delay, the ship left East London, South Africa, for Durban on August 3, 1991. It headed into 40-knot winds and 9-meter swells as the storm worsened. All passengers survived. The captain and some crew members were convicted of negligence after leaving the ship without assisting passengers. Ship entertainers helped keep passengers calm and coordinated with rescuers.
