MTS Oceanos Sinks Off South Africa, August 4, 1991
The cruise ship MTS Oceanos sank off the coast of South Africa on August 4, 1991. A breach allowed seawater into the lower machinery spaces. Missing one-way and stop valves in the vessel's sewage and water systems allowed flooding to spread through toilets, sinks, and showers. The captain and crew abandoned the ship before many passengers, and passengers were not alarmed before the evacuation. Entertainers on board helped organize the response while South African Air Force and Marine personnel carried out rescues. No one was killed. The captain was later found negligent by the courts.
