Mi-14 Destroyed During Water Takeoff Attempt, May 2006

A Russian Mi-14 helicopter was destroyed during an attempted water takeoff in May 2006.

The helicopter reportedly suffered an engine failure that prevented a proper takeoff. Its nose then dipped into the water, allowing the rotor blade tips to strike the surface and causing catastrophic airframe failure.

There were 13 occupants. One fatality was reported.
